What a compelling story! Tom illustrates many universal themes of how well-meaning institutions and leaders become Instruments of pain. This story exposes how deeply flawed human beings are whether we lead or follow. I also learned a lot about the culture of the Catholic priesthood. Many questionable values are baked in to the whole system.Tom inspires me by the way he courageously serves others while being victimized. I appreciate his honest self-disclosures illustrating that there are many sides to any life story. Although I got angry at his church leaders, he made me examine the assumptions and values behind my own motivations and choices. His antagonists are not simplistic. You can't make snap judgements. His story is emotionally riveting and his reflections force the reader to think deeply about their our own "vocation" (calling). There are many take-aways from the book.This is a real page-turner. Be prepared to become hooked on it.
